When a project has a particularly long timescale it is essential to rethink the HVAC strategy. District energy schemes, for example, are typically rolled-out gradually, linking additional buildings to the network over an extended period (years rather than months).

Valuable collection
Data collection and communication by individual devices is a powerful weapon in the battle for energy efficiency. Energy Upgrade Leader at Armstrong Fluid Technology, Jason Cox, shows how pumps can lead the charge.
Pump technology can play a significant part in industry’s bid to rein in energy use. Through data analytics and automation, pumps can optimise efficiency by reacting swiftly to changes in demand. A vital design consideration that is key in this role is decentralised data collection – the collection of data from energy-using devices
themselves, rather than simply metering energy usage across a site.

There are many stories of expensive pump repairs and performance problems brought on by cavitation. In one case, a municipal water department was replacing impellers for its reservoir feed valve every 18 months, for years, until engineering efforts produced an accurate diagnosis and resolution.

With the introduction of the UK Streamlined Energy and Carbon Reporting (SECR) policy, the number of companies needing to measure and provide usage data to the UK government will almost treble. Under the earlier Carbon Reduction Commitment around 4,000 businesses had to report their energy and emissions data, but the change in criteria will mean that the requirement will now affect around 11,900 companies. The decision aligns the government’s goals with the G20 Financial Stability Board's Taskforce on Climate-related financial disclosures.
The Armstrong Design Envelope product range includes embedded software for monitoring and reporting performance after installation which collects and reports data more accurately than a flow meter. So investing in replacement pumps (and harnessing their connectivity and in-built performance management technology) can provide the increased level of environmental reporting data necessary to meet the demands of the SECR policy, whilst making immediate improvements in energy efficiency.
