Facilities managers with responsibility for air conditioned buildings often ask how they can improve energy efficiency and drive down utility bills. Typically, access to information is not the problem. The latest BMS technology provides sophisticated data collection and display, with the ability to manipulate data to create statistical reports. The difficulty is how to take the next step - tackling the environmental performance of the building with practical measures (that do not require complete replacement of existing HVAC plant).

VIL pumps and design envelope technology reduce energy use and cool Toronto’s downtown.

By Brent Ross, Armstrong Fluid Technology

Deep lake water cooling (DLWC) is a groundbreaking cooling system that provides an alternative to conventional air conditioning. The system uses cold water from Lake Ontario to cool buildings in Toronto’s downtown core. The DLWC system has enough capacity to cool 3 million square meters (32 million square feet) of building space and is the largest renewable, lake-source cooling system of its kind in North America.

OPTI-VISOR: Chiller plant control solution

Posted by Armstrong Fluid Technology on Oct 23, 2013 11:46:37 AM

As seen in the print and digital versions of pme magazine, October 2013

Armstrong Fluid Technology launches a new control solution that improves the energy efficiency of chiller plants. Seamlessly interfacing with an existing building or chiller-plant automation system. the OPTl-VISOR controls the key components of a plant, providing the optimal operating settings for equipment, such as water-cooled variable-speed chillers, variable-flow cooling towers and variable-speed pumps on the chilled water and tower water circuits. By controlling the chiller plant settings to maximize system-wide efficiency, OPTI-VISOR will generate valuable energy savings even when applied to recently installed equipment. Armstrong estimates an energy savings of 15% to 30% can be expected from a typical installation on an existing all-variable-speed chiller plant.

Parallel Sensorless Pump Controller

Posted by Armstrong Fluid Technology on Sep 30, 2013 11:54:12 AM

As seen in Air Conditioning, Heating & Refrigeration NEWS, September 30, 2013

The Parallel Sensorless Pump Controller is an add-on control device that coordinates the output of multiple pumping units in a parallel configuration to achieve significant energy savings. Featuring advanced sensorless technology, the pump controller controls up to four of the manufacturer’s Design Envelope pumping units and delivers energy efficiency, along with reduced installation costs. The monitoring and instruction provided by a parallel sensorless pump controller can coordinate operations to achieve even greater energy savings. According to the manufacturer, when used in combination with its Design Envelope pumps, the Parallel Sensorless Pump Controller can help building owners significantly reduce their energy costs and achieve much greater efficiency throughout the system’s life cycle.
