When designing large-scale HVAC installations, the stakes are high. Even seemingly minor design decisions can have major implications when the resulting energy savings (or indeed energy wastage) are scaled up across a large multi-storey building. Achieving outstanding levels of energy efficiency is far from easy in these large-scale projects, however. The challenges fall into a number of categories:

When a major commercial building in the centre of Birmingham needed to refurbish the site’s HVAC pumping system, Armstrong Fluid Technology came up with an alternative solution which reduced energy consumption and improved efficiency.

The Axis office complex occupies a 178,000 sq. ft site close to Broad Street and Birmingham New Street Station. The 11-storey building has recently undergone a major HVAC refurbishment and Armstrong Fluid Technology was asked to provide a proposal for the project. The existing pumps, which were fixed speed end suction models, were reaching the end of their useful life.

The Design Envelope Vertical-In-Line Retrofit allows building owners to replace the moving parts of an installed Armstrong constant speed pump while retaining the existing pump casing, insulation and piping. This new solution reduces the costs for equipment, shipping and scrap as well as installation labor.

The Design Envelope Vertical-In-Line Retrofit provides owners of existing constant speed pumps with an opportunity to save up to 70% on energy costs by upgrading to variable speed. Design Envelope technology accommodates future changes in flow requirements and its variable speed operation means longer equipment life (20%-30%), and greater reliability.

Once it has been designed and installed, the HVAC system is something the facility manager has to live with for a long time. Heating and cooling equipment has a long life cycle, and because of the cost of replacement, it may well be kept in service even after the end of its projected useful life.

Edmonton International Airport is the primary air passenger and air cargo facility in the Edmonton region of the Canadian province of Alberta, serving over 6.6 million passengers annually. In 2009, the Edmonton Regional Airports Authority launched an expansion project aimed at increasing capacity. The project involved fast-tracking the development of the HVAC system to accommodate new construction.

A disturbance in one element can ripple out and affect the stability and viability of the entire system and the utility systems serving the air handling unit. In some cases, these issues manifest themselves in a manner that demands correction; tenants complain, product quality becomes substandard, or in extreme cases, the area serves becomes un-inhabitable.
