Taking the Heat Out of Datacenter Cooling

Posted by Armstrong Fluid Technology on Nov 1, 2015 10:00:15 PM

By Dominic Cutts

Director – System Solutions, Armstrong Fluid Technology

Generating heat is an unavoidable outcome of electrical resistance within IT processors and, as IT processors become ever more powerful, the demand for cooling is rising. Chilled water cooling systems have a crucial role to play in dissipating heat to ensure server reliability and prevent downtime, but there is an environmental price to be paid. Overall energy demand of datacenters is escalating between 5% and 10% each year, and are responsible for 3% of the total electrical energy consumption in the UK. As a result, the environmental impact of datacenters has come under international scrutiny, with a number of organizations developing guidelines and regulatory frameworks for datacenter operation.

The special needs of data centres

Data centres use lots of energy, including energy to cool the IT equipment. Not only must the building-services system be efficient but they also need to meet the special requirements of data centres, as Dominic Cutts of Armstrong Fluid Technology explains.

In critical cooling applications for data centres and other IT intensive spaces, HVAC system design has a fundamental impact on operational effectiveness and commercial success of the facility. Increasing use of advanced IT technologies, such as blade servers and virtualisation, is escalating the overall energy demand of data centres by 5 to 10% a year, and data centres are thought to be responsible for 3% of the electrical energy consumption of the UK.
