The retrofit of heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC) equipment could be a potential shortcut along the road to net-zero, says KEVIN LAIDLER, Sales Director, Middle East and Africa of Armstrong Fluid Technology.

Armstrong’s Pump Manager helps address performance issues.

To many of us, the construction boom that transformed a barren desert into a glittering metropolis may seem like only yesterday, but those once newly-constructed buildings are now more than 15 years old. Since then, we’ve seen the advent of Google, the rise of Facebook, and the introduction of driverless cars. With that in mind, how can we possibly believe that heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems installed before the launch of the first iPhone are still adequate?

Contributing to an Historically Significant Renovation Project

Posted by Armstrong Fluid Technology on Mar 30, 2022 5:54:46 AM

Armstrong recently contributed to the renovation of an historic hospital in the Chicago area. From the early 1900s to the 1980s, Cook County Hospital was a leading healthcare institution. Patients used to travel from countries around the world for the innovative treatments and advanced care available. Many of the people now living in the Chicago area were born at Cook County Hospital, in the 1950s, 60s and 70s. Although the many professionals who served in the hospital were leaders and innovators in the field of healthcare, the building facility and the mechanical systems were not up to the demands of a modern healthcare facility setting.  The original design had no cooling system, and the scale of renovations required to bring the facility up to modern standards made the prospect unaffordable. The hospital was closed in the 1980s and stood vacant for almost 30 years.

Creativity, Deep Retrofits And Making Buildings Greener And Healthier

Newer buildings tend to be designed to be ‘green’, but what about older existing buildings, which still represent the largest share of environmental impact? There is more work to be done in the retrofit sector; and improving environmental performance of older buildings often involves ‘deep retrofits’ that are costly and impact multiple factors inside a building.

In the COVID-19 era, there is also growing concern about needs such as circulating outside air, increasing humidity, and improving filtration systems even as older buildings seek to become greener. The consistent theme is a need to work toward better-designed, more energy efficient and healthier buildings.

The Design Envelope Vertical-In-Line Retrofit allows building owners to replace the moving parts of an installed Armstrong constant speed pump while retaining the existing pump casing, insulation and piping. This new solution reduces the costs for equipment, shipping and scrap as well as installation labor.

The Design Envelope Vertical-In-Line Retrofit provides owners of existing constant speed pumps with an opportunity to save up to 70% on energy costs by upgrading to variable speed. Design Envelope technology accommodates future changes in flow requirements and its variable speed operation means longer equipment life (20%-30%), and greater reliability.
